Count what matters in your text
The counter analyzes your text as you type. It shows words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs, sentences, and an estimated reading time. Everything is calculated on this page.
What each metric counts
A word is a sequence of letters or numbers; apostrophes and hyphens that connect words stay inside the word. Every visible symbol, including combined emojis, counts as a character.
A paragraph is a block of text separated from another by a blank line. Sentences are estimated from ending punctuation, so abbreviations such as “Mr.” can add an extra sentence.
How reading time is estimated
The estimate divides your word count by the speed you choose and rounds up to the next minute. If the text takes less than a minute, you will see “Less than 1 min”.
Reading speed varies by person and text type. Adjust words per minute to match your pace; it is not a guarantee of how long every reader will take.
Transform and copy your text
You can clean repeated spaces, change the text to uppercase or lowercase, or apply title case. These actions change the editor content, and the count updates with the transformed text.

Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes. The character metric includes them; the “without spaces” metric excludes spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
How are paragraphs counted?
Each text block separated by one or more blank lines counts as a paragraph. A single line break inside a block does not create another paragraph.
Is reading time exact?
It is an estimate based on the words per minute you choose. Actual time depends on the reader and the text.
